The history of Viagra

The history of ViagraThe reason why we decided to include an article on Viagra’s history on this blogsite is that its history is an interesting one and one of the most exciting histories that any medication has had. We also believe that you will realize what an impact this medication did on the way in which the general public sees erectile dysfunction, as we will also try and give a little overview of how people regarded and treated ED before the development of Viagra.

It is logical to conclude that erectile dysfunction has been present since we became a species. It is not some sort of viral infection that has come abut with the development of new strains of viruses. It is a simple physiological condition that must have been with us since forever. However, it was not treated as such until very recently. Namely, erectile dysfunction was mostly regarded as a weakness of men suffering from the condition and the sign that they are lesser men than others who didn’t have this problem. They did try and treat it however and they used different ingredients from nature which were inefficient in general. Some of them might have had some, very slight effect on ED and they did have placebo effect but until Viagra came out, there was no way to treat this condition.

In 1990, a company called Pfizer, which is one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, was developing a medication for treatment of high blood pressure. During clinical studies they have discovered that it does not do much in terms of lowering the blood pressure, but they also discovered that it enables men with ED to achieve erections. This lead them to further research the condition itself and the possibility of treating this condition with their new drug. They called it sildenafil citrate and with further development they managed to make it into the efficient ED treatment that we have today. It passed all the approval processes, including the one by FDA and it became the first drug to get this approval for treating erectile dysfunction. The drug got the brand name Viagra. This happened in 1998.The history of Viagra

For the first time in history, men suffering from ED had a medication they could rely on and that would allow them to lead an active sex life. It goes without saying that it became one of the best sold medications in the world and for five years it remained the only such medication on the market. During this time, it also did plenty towards shifting the public’s opinion on ED, which was slowly becoming yet another medical condition and not a sign of being a lesser man.

In 2003, however, Viagra got its first competitor, Levitra and later that same year another, Cialis. There were now three PDE5 inhibitors to choose from and this marks the beginning of one of the most intense competitions in the pharmaceutical field. People have since been weighing their options and especially Cialis became quite popular. However, people are still mostly buying Viagra, mostly due to the fact that it is the PDE5 inhibitor that started it all and that has been researched, studied and tried most of all the three options. It is safe to say that Viagra is still ED treatment #1 and for a reason.
